In 1968, a ground-breaking experiment was conducted on a third grade class in the US state of Iowa. Ms Jane Elliott divided her pupils by eye colour, declaring one group inferior and the other superior. The latter was given more perks. Within hours, children who had once been friends turned hostile towards each other, their behaviour shaped entirely by an arbitrary distinction.
