A new cafe in Singapore is not an unusual sight, but here’s an uncommon one that has only bak kwa snacks on the menu. The 12-seat cafe opened for business just today (Mar 29) at Kallang Bahru, and is run by Peng Guan . Yep, the same folks who sell bak kwa, starting from a humble hawker stall in Chinatown to several islandwide outlets today. We had discovered Peng Guan by accident in 2019, after doing our ranking story for the best bak kwa . We were pretty impressed by the quality and price of the grilled pork slices, which were sold at around $48 per kg that year, around $10 cheaper than its competitors. And best of all, it had no insane queues as it was still relatively unknown then. No part of this story or photos can be reproduced without permission from 8days.sg . 1 7 Well, that was then. Peng Guan’s millennial owner, Zhang Ziyue, 37, has since grown his business into a chain. He opened ‘2-in-1’ hybrid concept hawker stalls to sell his bak kwa and hawker food like bak kut teh and chicken rice , in order to meet stall tenancy criteria for selling takeaway food (like bak kwa). 2 7 Peng Guan cafe His latest venture is a Peng Guan cafe, which has air-con and comfy dine-in seats. Like any trendy cafe, it serves pastries and coffee, but with a Peng Guan twist: everything comes with bak kwa. 3 7 Bak kwa muffins and tarts on the menu Like Bak Kwa Muffin ($3 for one, $5 for two) , Bak Kwa Tart ($1.20 for one, $3 for three) and Bak Kwa Puff ($2.50 for one, $7 for three) . You can also get steamed Bak Kwa Pau ($1 for one, $4.50 for five) , Big Pau ($2) stuffed with minced pork and mini Char Siew Pau ($3 for three) . 4 7 There are beverages to go with the snacks, like hot Espresso ($2) , Flat White ($3 for hot, $4 for cold) and brewed tea served in a pot with options such as Green Tea Lychee ($4) and Melon Oolong ($4) . 5 7 Pastries made in-house The pastries are made in-house. “Our cafe is all about bak kwa and creating more variety for customers. Bak kwa is not just a CNY goodie. We also want our customers to buy bak kwa as a snack for daily consumption, and the prices we offer are quite competitive in the market,” says Peng Guan’s owner Ziyue. 6 7 As with his other new stall openings, he is running a promotion till Apr 28 for his bak kwa, which is going at $10 for 500g for all flavours, like Traditional (minced pork), Sliced, Chilli and Chicken Bak Kwa. “We are expecting heavy traffic,” he shares. 7 7 According to Ziyue, his bak kwa is also “freshly-grilled daily” on-site. Peng Guan Cafe is at 71 Kallang Bahru, #01-531H, S330071. Open daily 8am-8pm. www.pengguan.com.sg .
