National unity is not about uniformity, but different opinions and values coexisting: Pritam Singh

SINGAPORE – National unity is not about uniformity, but about recognising that different opinions and values can coexist while remaining committed to the common good, said Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh. This is what makes for a strong democracy – the capacity to engage in open, respectful discourse and find a path forward together, even when people do not see eye to eye, he said in the Workers’ Party’s (WP) National Day message on Aug 8. Central to Singapore’s strength is its people’s ability to embrace diversity – not as a source of division, but as a foundation for unity, said Mr Singh, who is WP’s secretary-general and an MP for Aljunied GRC. He said: “Recent events and conflicts around the world have tested our unity and resilience, yet Singaporeans have demonstrated a profound commitment to our shared values and our nation. “We are grateful for our peace and security, which are the result of Singaporeans’ unwavering dedication to protecting what we hold dear.” Mr Singh called on Singaporeans to reflect on the Republic’s journey as a nation so far, the challenges it has overcome, and the dreams that drive it forward, as they gather to celebrate the nation’s 59th year of independence. Different Singaporeans express their patriotism in different ways, he added. “For my colleagues and me in the WP, participating in the democratic process is our way of making a contribution to our nation.” It is through this process that the WP endeavours to build a Singapore that is fairer, more inclusive and brighter for all, he said. Democratic engagement empowers citizens to speak truth to power, and it is through this engagement that those in power are reminded of their responsibility to listen, to adapt and to act in the best interests of all Singaporeans, he added. Mr Singh added that the WP stands with all Singaporeans, regardless of political affiliation, in celebrating Singapore’s achievements and in renewing its commitment to walk together with them long into the future. He said: “As we chart our path ahead, let’s do so with hope, determination and an unwavering belief in the strength of our people and the enduring spirit of our nation.”
