Madeleine’s Original Portuguese Egg Tarts has been operating from a simple, nondescript unit at Tanjong Katong since 1998, and is famous for its flaky and rich tarts which cost S$2.50 a piece. In the TikTok, the company said that the decision to shut down "was not made lightly". "But after much consideration, we are confident that this is the right step for us at this point in our life." When CNA Lifestyle visited the stall at around 1.30pm on Wednesday, we were the only customers there. Speaking to an employee of Madeleine’s Original Portuguese Egg Tarts, we learned the unit is rented from a landlord. However, said landlord has decided to sell his unit, causing the owners of Madeleine’s Original Portuguese Egg to "take a break" and shut down operations. “(There's) still no location to move to. The place has to be big and (have a) power supply (that's) good enough for our machines,” said the employee, who added that the duration of this "break" is still unknown. Besides egg tarts, Madeleine’s Original Portuguese Egg Tarts also sells Macau crispy puffs (S$2.50 per piece). Fans who want to try these treats for the last time should do so before Aug 16 – the stall's closing date.
