We thank Lee Qin Yuan for her Voices Of Youth letter “ ” (Aug 5). In the article “ ” (May 3, 2023), Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean cited data from an Institute of Mental Health survey in 2022, which estimated that potentially about 18,000 Singapore residents had abused drugs in the past year. The actual numbers could be higher. Popular culture, social media and global trends have led to a growing misperception that drug use is normal and acceptable. This misconception can lead more young people to try drugs due to curiosity and peer influence or to use drugs as a coping mechanism for stress or depression. Our youth often underestimate the dangers of drug addiction until it is too late. Beyond legal consequences, drug abuse causes severe mental and/or physical harm and even death.  We need more young advocates like Qin Yuan to raise awareness and intervene when friends are at risk. Her point about approaching them with sensitivity and compassion is critical. We also encourage parents to take the same approach and engage with their children about these issues early on. The National Council Against Drug Abuse, in collaboration with the Central Narcotics Bureau and community partners, organises events and provides resources to educate youth and parents about drug addiction and effective engagement strategies. We thank Qin Yuan for speaking up and we share her concerns and worry. Together, with the efforts of dedicated individuals like her, we can protect the lives of the people around us and strive towards a drug-free Singapore.  Council Member National Council Against Drug Abuse
