Mr Benny Lai Zhao Wei suggested that supermarkets can further cut plastic use by selling fruits and vegetables loose ( Sept 11). However, it is unclear what measures would have to be taken to ensure that customers do not damage the merchandise as they pick and choose. This practice may also result in greater food wastage and higher prices in the long run. A more technologically advanced approach could be considered to protect our environment. Besides minimising single-use plastic, efforts can be made to develop materials that are more environmentally friendly and sustainable. For instance, in Europe, efforts are under way to use grass for making packaging options such as cardboard and folding boxes. As a garden city, Singapore seems to have an abundance of grass – it can be found in Housing Board and private estates as well as parks. It seems logical that Singapore should at least study if it’s feasible to use this resource to develop its brand of ecologically friendly material that can be moulded into packaging material and bags.
