Forum: Stay or travel on National Day? Many ways to be a patriot

I read with interest the letters from Forum writers Richard Tan Kok Tong (B Aug 1) and Tan Yi Shu (Y Aug 6). Despite their differing views about staying in Singapore on Aug 9 to show patriotism for our country, something in common that was evident was their deep sense of national pride. As a patriotic Singaporean myself, I agree that staying in Singapore is probably the best way to celebrate National Day, but it is also not the only way to show patriotism for our mighty little country. Many people spend the National Day watching the parade live or on telecast with family and friends, donning red and white, bonding over delicious local food. Some Singaporeans take the opportunity of the extended weekend, which could be a limited common window for the whole family, to travel. The Swiss and Americans fly home to celebrate their National Day because many work away from home. In Singapore, the difference is that people travel away from home to take a break from their day-to-day base. It can be a little extreme to label these busy people who seize such opportunities as unpatriotic. Patriotism can be felt and expressed in different ways. Children wave flags and sing the National Day songs with gusto. They stand at attention with right fists over their hearts and recite the pledge lustily. Young adults get involved in different activities that let them offer their service and respect for the country. For me, whenever I talk to foreigners who are doubtful about our strict laws, for instance, I find myself defending Singapore and dispelling every myth with some magical eloquence that I did not know I had. I would say the surge of patriotism comes through with whoever, whatever, and whenever. I have never travelled overseas on National Day, but if I do some day, it definitely will not diminish my sense of pride and love for Singapore. Surely, the level of patriotism in people can be measured in more ways than staying home on National Day. But, if we can prioritise spending it in Singapore, that would still be the best way to show national solidarity.
