I refer to the article “ ” (Aug 22). I am concerned by the surge in scams in Singapore. The statistics are indeed alarming, and should this trajectory persist, we could be facing total losses exceeding $770 million by the end of 2024. This situation is deeply troubling, with 86 per cent of victims manipulated into transferring funds through psychological tactics, not direct account access. Investment and government impersonation scams are particularly common, underscoring the need for better protection and awareness. Many Singaporeans, including friends and family, have been affected, highlighting the urgent need for real solutions. I urge the authorities to consider launching more vigorous educational campaigns designed to elevate awareness about the evolving landscape of scams. Furthermore, fostering stronger collaboration with social media platforms and e-commerce websites to implement stringent identity verification processes for sellers and enhance security features are crucial. Together, we have the chance to create a safer environment for all Singaporeans by tackling these threats head-on. I hope for more robust, proactive measures to protect our community and to find effective solutions to this growing crisis.
