I am intrigued and amazed by the unconventional Tokyo Toilet Project where 16 of the who’s who in architecture were commissioned to design and refurbish 17 public toilets ( July 20). All of them are design marvels and have attracted global praise and visits from tourists. For many years, the National Environment Agency, with the help of the Restroom Association of Singapore, has been trying to improve the state of public toilets in Singapore. Having our own Singapore public toilet project will raise awareness of this issue. If the project is successful, it might even become a must-see, social media-worthy attraction for tourists. Singapore, being a vibrant global city but lacking in land, has to pull out all the stops for new ideas. The Singapore Tourism Board and the Urban Redevelopment Authority can be consulted to map out viable public toilets islandwide to build or refurbish. The project should not be left to a select few architects. A nationwide Singapore public toilet project design competition could be organised. It should be open to the public, so the project has better outreach. The competition brief can state the requirements, and contractors qualified by the authorities with relevant experience will execute the actual works of the eventual design winners. Public toilets in Singapore require periodic refurbishment, so why not make the funding work harder and achieve more objectives? The year 2024 has been designated the year of public hygiene with a Public Toilets Task Force planned to study and recommend solutions to improve the cleanliness of public toilets. A Singapore public toilet project might be worth looking into.
