Forum: Let’s celebrate effort and encourage our children

It is commendable to give more opportunities to high-ability students, but let us also support those who are ordinary.

It is commendable to give more opportunities to high-ability students, but let us also support those who are ordinary.  All children deserve nurturing, and the best way to support them is by encouraging a balanced life that enriches them academically, physically, emotionally and spiritually, and instils good moral character. It is important to cultivate the love for reading as this promotes self-learning. This is a challenge, however, with schoolwork, enrichment classes and the lure of online games and social media.  Some pupils, unable to cope with school pressure, struggle through the Primary School Leaving Examination, and then fall behind in secondary school, eventually becoming disillusioned. It is this group we must reach out to. Celebrate effort, encourage them and support them emotionally. It takes a village to raise a child. This requires the combined effort of parents, school and loved ones.
