I wish to add my voice to the conversation about the burning of paper offerings ( , Aug 7, and , Aug 8). For a person who has respiratory problems, the effects are a great deal more than inconvenience. Asthma sufferers are in real and actual danger of dying. I am one such person. Regarding fairness and equality, this is the only religious practice in Singapore that has widespread impact on the community at large. There is no escape from the smell and the ashes since the burning occurs in housing estates, on roadsides, outside markets and near bus stops. Religious practices in other faiths are mostly confined to their respective places of worship. I strongly support freedom of religion and its practice, but not at the expense of others’ health and potentially even life itself.
