In the light of recent Forum letters commending the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) for its swift and selfless actions ( , Aug 1; and , Aug 8), I’d like to bring up the need to recognise the essential role it plays in our nation. Singaporeans are proud of the National Day Parade (NDP), a grand celebration of our independence and unity. One of the parade’s most beloved features is the parade and ceremony segment, in which various military and civilian contingents march together to pay their respects to the nation. A highlight of this segment is the guard of honour (GOH), which is made up of contingents from the Singapore Army, Republic of Singapore Navy, Republic of Singapore Air Force, Digital and Intelligence Service, and Singapore Police Force. The NDP is more than just a showcase of our military strength. It is a reflection of the country’s collective resilience and preparedness. The SCDF is at the forefront of civil defence, playing a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of Singapore. Its responsibilities span emergency response, firefighting, rescue operations, disaster management and providing essential support during public health crises. Given its officers’ bravery and sacrifice, it is time to recognise these heroes by including them in the GOH contingent. SCDF deserves this honour for its service to our safety and security, and this would underscore its huge contribution to Singapore’s Total Defence framework.
