Speech that incites violence over race or religion is unacceptable in Singapore. We are a multiracial society, and there are effective laws and policies for Singaporeans to coexist harmoniously for the safety and happiness of its citizens ( ). The recent riots in Britain are not surprising. Post-war immigrants from Commonwealth countries brought significant demographic changes to Britain. Such changes can lead to racial tensions if not properly managed. Any perceived unhappiness with immigrants or potential problems must be dealt with early instead of being swept under the carpet. Riots usually take place when the gravity of the situation is underestimated. Singapore has been working hard to forge a multiracial society regardless of race, language or religion. So far, it has been working well. However, when we’re faced with economic challenges and more people lose their jobs, the strain can lead to a blame game. But I am confident that Singapore can effectively navigate such a situation, as we have built trust for one another over the years.  In Singapore, we are encouraged to give respect and space to others in our community to prevent misunderstandings and to coexist peacefully. This is the best way to prevent riots rather than to have to deal with them later.
