If a government unit like the Community Relations Unit is empowered to address noise disturbances, extending its authority to tackle second-hand smoke could be a logical next step. Noise and second-hand smoke are among the most common complaints neighbours have. Excessive noise, especially during quiet hours, can disrupt sleep and daily routines. Second-hand smoke can be a health concern, especially in shared living spaces where smoke can travel easily between units. Just as noise can be a nuisance and affect the well-being of others, second-hand smoke can be equally, if not more, harmful due to the associated health risks. Both issues can lead to conflicts and tensions within communities, so they are often brought up for resolution. Extending the unit’s authority to cover second-hand smoke would protect non-smokers, especially those with health conditions exacerbated by smoke, and promote a healthier living environment.
