I refer to the Forum letter “ ” (Aug 7). While I can empathise with the writer’s feelings about inconveniences caused by joss paper-burning, I feel we must have some sensitivity towards others’ religions. Singaporeans are accorded equal opportunity and fair treatment – regardless of race or religion – and this has been well-received, both in word and deed by the people. Despite being inconvenienced by smoke and ashes blown towards homes and shop premises when joss papers are burnt during the Seventh Month Festival, most people will take things in their stride. In a multiracial society, we have to respect each other’s religion and practices. A little inconvenience is nothing if everybody is happy. This give-and-take attitude has been inculcated in our culture and it augurs well for our future.
