Recently, I researched the use and purchase of hearing aids because I am suffering from a moderate loss of hearing. I am grateful the Government allows seniors to get subsidies (based on means testing and eligibility) to buy hearing aids from the Seniors’ Mobility and Enabling Fund, for instance. As reported in the article “ ” (Aug 11), one’s hearing health has a direct effect on one’s overall health and well-being. Primarily, hearing loss can lead to cognitive decline, and adults with untreated hearing loss are more likely to develop dementia. I was thus convinced I had to see an audiologist to treat my hearing loss. The audiologist said I had suffered hearing loss for the last five years. I am 62 years old. Hearing aids are a useful and necessary medical device for anyone who suffers from hearing loss. I was surprised by how much they cost – from $5,000 to $15,000 a pair, depending on the range. In Singapore, hearing loss is not covered by insurance. Why not allow the use of MediSave for the purchase of hearing aids as they are a medical device that can benefit our health? This will benefit many working adults who need to function well at work. Others will also be encouraged to get hearing aids for a better quality of life.
