Forum: Act against drivers who don’t signal intention to turn at junctions

I estimate that at least a quarter of drivers do not signal when they are turning at a traffic junction from a lane that allows a driver to go straight or turn.

I estimate that at least a quarter of drivers do not signal when they are turning at a traffic junction from a lane that allows a driver to go straight or turn. This is dangerous as the driver behind assumes that the driver in front is going straight if he does not signal, but then the driver in front instead comes to an abrupt stop at the junction, causing the driver behind to brake at the last moment. These drivers who do not signal in such lanes assume they do not need to just because the lane allows them to go straight or turn. This is a breach of the Road Traffic Act. These drivers who do not signal at traffic junctions generally also do not signal when changing lanes. These bad driving habits can lead to accidents which could have been avoided, if only these drivers had clearly signalled their turning or lane-changing intentions.  It is time for the Traffic Police to act against such drivers. While it is difficult for police to detect such minor infringements, the public can help by submitting such videos to the authorities. The Traffic Police could then warn the driver if it is the first or second offence, but impose fines for subsequent offences, with heavier fines for additional infringements. These fines will encourage drivers to have better driving habits and eventually lead to fewer unnecessary accidents.
